Alabama Association of Accountants & Tax        Preparers

Membership  in the Alabama Association of Accountants shell consist of five classes:

Active

Associate

Life

Honorary

Retired

Applicants for Active membership must be:

1) An independent Accountant, CPA, tax practitioner, bookkeeper or and employee of an Accountant or CPA. He or she shall have been in public practice for two (2) or more years, or employed by an Accountant or CPA for two (2) or more years prior to engaging in public practice; or

2) An Internal Revenue Agent or State Tax Examiner for two (2) or more years prior to engaging in public practice; or

3) An Office Auditor or Tax Technician for the Internal Revenue Service or Alabama Income Tax Examiner for four (4) or more years prior to engaging in Public practice; or

4) A graduate of an accredited university or college with a major in accounting who desires to enter the field of accounting or who is currently employed by an Independent Accountant or any Accounting who is not registered with the State Board of Public Accountancy, due to the closed registration, who has been in public practice for at least three (3) years, or a CPA.

5) In addition to the foregoing professional qualifications, the applicant must be of good moral character, hold a State of Alabama license and any other license required by his or her local community and maintain an office and retain his or her working papers.

Applicants for Associate Membership, a membership category having all membership privileges except discounts on seminars, voting and  holding elective office, shall qualify in any of the following categories:

1) Persons serving the accounting profession such as salespersons

2) Educators

3) Students enrolled in accounting courses in college

4) In addition to the foregoing, applicants must be of good moral character.

 Life and Honorary membership shall be conferred under special circumstances by action of the Board of Directors.

 Retired membership shall be extended to members who are age 65 or older, disabled, retired from active practice and have been an active member in good standing for at least ten (10) years prior to retiring.  They may receive seminar discounts, vote and hold elected office.
